Our show the other night at the bourbon was a great time. I.M.U. Productions really hooked us up on that one, and we reciprocated by playing most likely our best show to date.

In fact we have some pretty cool LOW-FI MP3S on our Dowloads Page.

Thanks to Lions in the Street and Mad Shadow as well as Cindy and all the I.M.U. crew.

May 24th. 2007

Hey, we got some new videos posted on our downloads page. Thanks to Byron for some great videography.

Feb 27th. 2007

Well, we had a blast playing Pub 340 on Friday. We were lucky enough to have our man from Finland Beni Köhler (www.benikohler.com) come down and take some shots of us playing. Beni is a fabulously talented photographer and a super nice guy, he took the best photos of us that we have ever had the pleasure of looking at. View them here. We also had our man Byron come down and take some video, so stay tuned for that to be put up on this site.

Jakartah was the first band on and they kicked ass, we promise that if you check them out, you will have a new favorite band.

Nov 1st. 2006

Riot at Richards!! Man what a blast playing at Richards on the 16th. If you weren't there then you missed the pride of Birmingham Alabama Taylor Hollingsworth and the Spider Eaters and that's a shame, cause they rocked the place down. What a great place to play, with the lighting and the sound system, we felt like we were in heaven. Thanks to House of Blues for getting us on that bill and the handful of people who got over the disappointment of not having the Detroit Cobras play.

Our next gig is for the Nerve Magazine's Festival of Guns @ Limerick Junction (the old Brickyard) Nov 18th. and we are stoked to play the festival again. The Brickyard used to be our favorite place to gig and we are looking forward to checking it out in it's new incarnation. thanks to Brad at the Nerve magazine and Sean over at SPM for putting us on the bill.

Oct 14th. 2006

Alright! We are booked to play Richard's on Richards (1036 Richards) Mon, October 16 opening for THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW AND TAYLOR HOLLINGSWORTH. Apparently the Detroit Cobras are having problems getting over the border, so we got the call.

This is definately the highest profile gig we've had yet, and we couldn't be more stoked. See you there.

Oct 7th. 2006

OK, after taking the summer of 2006 off, White Licorice is back with a vengence!! We have a slew of new material and a gig booked for Oct 12th. which is the after party for the mighty Nashville Pussy at the Library Square Public House at 300 west Georgia. That should be a banger!!

Other then that we have plans to record soon, so check back for fresh MP3s to be posted soon.

Febuary 4th. 2006

Yes, we return from our two consecutive saturday night gigs triumphant. The show at Pub 340 on the 21st was a blast and the new and improved stage really helped cut down on the beer spillage that almost killed us the last time we played there. Thanks to Pub 340 staff, Sean from SPM productions and the other bands that night.

Our show on the 28th. at Pats pub was just off the hook. Playing with the Manvils was rad because not only are they good friends, but they bring out a hip, young, and largely female crowd. Nice! I think we played alright and surprisingly, people seem to be warming up to the White Licorice sound. Thanks to the Manvils, the staff at Pats and all the new friends we made.

We also have confirmed another gig Friday March 31st @ the Lamplighter with A Ghost To Kill Again, the Feminists & Avatar. So get off the couch and come down and check it out. Life's too short not to.

January 15th. 2006

Oh yeah! we booked a show at Pat's pub for Saturday January 28th. And the best part about it is, it is with our old buddies the Manvils. We have been meaning to play a show together for a while and expect it to be a hell of a lot of fun. I mean come on, we share a rehearsal room and a bass player.. It's going to get crazy in there.

January 2nd. 2006

Happy New Year from White Licorice!!!

We have a gift for you. We have decided to release our Electric E.P.online as a free download. That's right, you can download all 6 songs in cd quality mp3 format absolutely free RIGHT HERE. Why? Because we are too busy working on amazing new songs to put it out, so here you go.

Also, our Show on the 21st of Jan. 2006 has been moved to PUB 340 and we are stoked about that!! We are looking forward to playing there again, and we guarantee that you will be astounded with the new WL sound.

Nov 22nd. 2005

We are proud to anounce that our search for the elusive second guitar player is over. We are hooked up with Charlie Jim Rogers, a nice young man with monster guitar skills and a real bad attitude. Made for this band! Jim's been around forever, on the east coast, and is going to teach this town a thing or two about how to throw it down onstage.

Lock up your daughters and livestock, here comes Jim!

We got some gigs coming up in january, and some recording shortly after that. Check back later about that....

We officially declare war on the world.

Sept. 1st. 2005

Man, what a summer!! Matt just came back from Ontario, and JK is heading to NYC in September and meanwhile Greg has been doing some acting and making some power moves with his other band the Manvils, so not much White Licorice stuff is going on. But that doesn't mean that we've been slacking, oh no, we've been writing like fiends and plan to release our first E.P. at the end of September and release another 6 song by christmas.

We did manage to play an opening slot at the Brickyard Friday Aug 26th. supporting the amazing Married to Music and that will probably be it as far as shows go until October. Stay tuned for details of a CD release party.....

June 20th. 2005

Troglodytes unite!! We had a freak'n blast playing the Cellar last night. What a nice little joint, the only thing that could make it more subterranean feeling would be to have stalagtites hanging from the ceiling.

Hong Kong Blonde bailed on the the show at the last minute, so the mighty Motorama stepped up to headline the show, and they delivered. They have been touring a lot lately and you can really hear it in the songs. You should be ashamed of yourself if you missed them.Ashamed! Openers Secondstall were quite good as well, keep an eye on these up and comers.

Of course the place was empty, but the staff at the Cellar were stellar to us and Brad from the Nerve was, as always, really cool and supportive even as he was losing his shirt on the show.

We came. We saw. We rocked. We drank. We went home.

May 27th.2005

Well, we didn't make the cut for Music Waste this year, and in fact we got some delightful press in the May 13th. edition of Only magazine (who put on Music Waste)

"Even though Black Rice is broken up, would it still be relevant to ask if that other shitty band White Licorice became White Licorice because of the super popularity of Black Rice last year when they first started getting together at Charts in Burnaby?"

It's just kind of silly isn't it? Where is Burnaby?

Other than that we are hooked up over at myspace.com now, so if you are so inclined, you can come on down and show us some love at @ www.myspace.com/whitelicorice. We know that you use it.

April 7th. 2005

This is neat..... we have finally have some video footage roughly spliced together...

Choose your file size: Large (28 Meg file) or Small (5 Meg file)
(quicktime movie files)

No frills style, just for fun. Thanks to Captain Borneo from Neurotic Laundry Productions for throwing that together.

We also have an exciting show booked for Friday May 13th @ the Brickyard with Bend Sinister and Insipid. These bands are both off the hook, they really amp up the prog. Bring your tinfoil hat for that one, cause there is gonna be some mindwaves flying around.

Later.

March 20th. 2005

Bit of down time in White Licorice world. We are curently regrouping and preparing to record some new tunes, while still whoring ourselves around town, playing anywhere with a beer tap.

We've had three shows since last update, probably the best of which was with Time is the Enemy at the Pic feb. 26th. Also, the beer army that is Motorama were kind enough to think of us for an opening slot at the old Mike's tavern with Übersissy. remember the Muscle Bitches and the little guitars? That guy's new band.

Anyways.

Seriously though, new songs. Good ones.

Jan 15th. 2005

Well, our first show of 2005 was a resounding success. Good crowd, and it is always a pleasure to play the brickyard. We would like to thank Sean from SPM productions for hooking us up with that gig, and all of our friends, old and new who showed up to support us.

.

Dec 14th. 2004

Although it wasn't our best gig by far, we did get some press in the Nerve magazine for our show at Pub 340 Nov 19th.

"A trio called White Licorice was playing and I can't figure out how to describe them 'cuz they were weird. They had a lot of vocal harmonizing & it was kinda metal & their drummer was really hi-hat happy (which was cool) but that's all I can muster until I see them again."

We'll take it.

In other news we have expanded. That's right we are officially a quartet with the addition of our pal Jet Whitfield on guitar. Some of you may know Jet as the soundman of the now defunct Mike's Tavern and his other musical projects around Vancouver. We are playing our first gig together at the Brickyard January 14th 2005.

Ohhhhhh the Brickyard.. It's been too long since we last played there. It's gonna be a blood show.

Nov 9th. 2004

Sweet! We got accepted into the Nerve magazine's Festival of Guns this year. We are playing Friday Nov 19th. at Pub 340 with John Ford and the Ultimate Power Duo. That's a guaranteed good time right there.

Also, if our friend Burger could give us a call or an email, we would much appreciate it. Dude, we don't have your number!

Oct 24th. 2004

Awesome show at pub 340 on thursday! All 4 bands were top-notch, and it was good drunken vibes.

Thanks again to 1000 Year Plan, Satellite of June, and Foregone, as well as Pierre from Pub 340.

Oct 11th. 2004

We are dilligently working on getting this cd out. We have been working on the packaging, and are givin'er on the financing end, so we should have this bad boy out soon.

In other news, we are doing another last minute thing at the Pic pub Thursday Oct 14th. with the Unlearned, so that will be cool. Come down and check it out!

Oct 2nd. 2004

Alright, enough with the negativity, it doesn't help anything and that energy is better spent on creating than complaining.

We are pleased to anounce that we have managed to book a mammoth show with 1000 Year Plan, (from Montreal, final records act) Satellite of June, and Foregone on Thursday Oct 21st. at Pub 340.

This is going to be a great show, all bands on the bill are top-notch, so come check it out!

Special thanks to Kris from Forgone and Pierre from Pub340 for helping us put this together.

Sept 22nd. 2004

Has the whole world gone fucking crazy?

In trying to book some gigs for late October, we have found out that the Showroom has been closed down due to Liquor license problems and that Mike's Tavern is no longer doing live music.

That just blows our minds, these are two more up and coming clubs that have just succumbed to the pressures of commerce in this city. Don't hate the player, baby, hate the game.

Sept 13th. 2004

Crap!! Diepopstar seems to have bit the dust. According to http://www.diepopstar.com/, they were "forced to shut down" . A real gyp, especially as they were the promoter for our upcoming show @ the penthouse which is now in limbo.

Also, much to our disbelief, we didn't get into citr's ShindiG again this year. We really wanted to play the Railway club, but there is apparently no room in the college radio hipster eschelon for such a crew of fuckups and misfits like White Licorice.

We are going back doing what we do best, which is play empty dives for people who care about music. We have some things going for late October so Check the Gigs page for more shows.

Aug 23. 2004

Jesus, were the jams kicked out at Mike's on saturday night or what? That had to be our most positive show experience yet, many kind words were lavished on us, we even had some people on the dancefloor!

The Ugly Memories did a great set, definately check them out if you get a chance.

Once again thanks to Brad from the the Nerve magazine for hooking us up on that bill, and thanks to Jet the soundman and all of the staff of Mike's.

We are playing again @ the world famous Marine Club with the Unlearned Friday Aug. 27th. Perhaps we'll see you there.

"Who says nobody ever takes photos of the drummer?"

Aug 17. 2004

The word for this month is Shows! At the end of August we will have completed more gigs in a month than all of last year, now that's more like it! We've had a lot of fun and met a lot of really cool people.

Our next one is a short notice gig Saturday August 21sth @ the Mike's Tavern with Ugly Memories and DJ Swinging Creepers. Check the Gigs page for more shows.

Brad from the Nerve magazine was nice enough to think of us for the gig, thanks Brad!

Bands+People+Beer=Fun. Come check out one of the shows!

July 23rd. 2004

Wow we had a blast on wednesday palying at the Showroom cabaret @ the plaza of nations with Shiver and Stonehead.

We met a lot of cool people including Jagoda from flesh photography, who was kind enought to email us some photos she took at the the gig. You can check them out here.

Great room and some really cool bands, mix that with some cold beer and you got a lot of fun.

Thanks to Sean @ www.spmmusic.biz for hooking us up with that one.

July 3rd. 2004

Happy Canada day to one and all from White Licorice. We celebrated Canada day this year the same way as we did last year, by playing the Kingsway Block Party an outdoor show at Kingsway and Clarke, July 1st. They had a bouncing castle, climbing wall, organic market, beer garden and some frighteningly pale rockers making a real racket.

"Cheap beers and sunstroke."

I can't say it was our best show, but i can tell you that we had fun playing so early in the day. SK robot also played and although we had didn't catch their set due to dehydration and heatstroke (6 hours between our sets), apparently they rocked it real nice, so check out their site. Thanks again to Tina from Kitches brew for putting that on.

June 25th. 2004

What a week in White Licorice world!

We just wrapped up our luxurious 3 day recording stint at the Hive Studios. Man, what a great, relaxed place to record. We got six songs done and we couldn't be happier with the recording quality. Colin Stewart, our engineer/spiritual advisor was a real pro with a great calming attitude. Check out some MP3s here.

"The stress of being in the studio finally cracks Matt."

"J.K. and Greg deal with the pressure a little differently."

Well, that's about it for now, we'll see you later.
